Wingfoil World Tour announced for 2021
The Global Wingsports Association (GWA) announced the launch of the inaugural Wingfoil World Tour.
Wing foiling, also known as wing surfing or wing boarding, is a new water sport that combines windsurfing, surfing, and kiteboarding elements.
Riders use a lightweight handheld wing that harnesses the wind's power and propels a hydrofoil board forward.
The first-ever Wingfoil World Tour will have two divisions: surf-freestyle and surf-race.
The surf-freestyle discipline focuses on air tricks and wave riding maneuvers.
The surf-race category is a course race-style competition with a start and finish line and blends tacks and jibes with surfing waves.
The surf-freestyle discipline includes the expression format where competitors surf waves or swells and perform air tricks using the given water conditions.
Athletes need to have health insurance with international coverage to compete in all stages.
The first dedicated wing foiling professional circuit will feature no more than eight stages - five have already been confirmed.
The Global Wingsports Association was founded by several established water sports brands and companies.
The GWA is run by the same team that manages the Global Kitesports Association (GKA) and the professional kiteboarding circuit.
Both organizations share the same headquarters in Hamburg, Germany.
The 2021 GWA Wingfoil World Tour is expected to kick off in Leucate, France, in April.
