Kelly Slater failed to advance Round 1 of the Quiksilver Pro France 2014, at Hossegor. Gabriel Medina is through to Round 3.

After watching Taj Burrow, Michel Bourez, Jeremy Flores, and Joel Parkinson claiming their early morning heats in the Southwest of France, Slater knew he had to build a winning pace to keep his Dream Tour title hopes alive and steady.

But Matt Wilkinson had a different plan, in a rather strange heat. In one of the best waves of the day, Slater pulled off a 9-point huge air reverse but backed off for Wilkinson, who had priority.

In the end, Wilkinson got the most out of his rides sending Slater and Matt Banting to Round 2. The Floridian is now pressured to win his next heat as he must not let Medina improve his overall results.

The Brazilian, knowing that the 11-time world champion had been forced to surf Round 2, put on a professional performance against Tiago Pires and free surfing star Dane Reynolds.

Pires got started quickly, with good wave selection, but Gabriel Medina followed notching several good scores and building a solid heat total. Despite Reynolds' attacks, the wonder boy sealed the deal with a second seven-pointer.

"That was a hard heat. Dane is always scary and Tiago has a lot of experience in these waves. I'm feeling good. My boards feel good, and my surfing feels strong. France has a lot of special memories for me," explains Medina.

Jeremy Flores was finally able to win a heat. This time, in home waters and surrounded by fans, the former Pipeline Master locked in one of the highest heat totals of the day.

"This is a big event for me. I have had a tough year, and I am fighting for my life on tour in these last three events. I've never had a strong result here in France, and I'm hoping to change that this season," concludes Flores.
