On January 28, 2017, Sophia Tiaré Bartlow was killed in a car crash on the North Shore of Oahu, in Hawaii. She was just 26.
Born and raised in Long Beach, Sophia rapidly became an accomplished waterwoman. She won the 2014 US SUP Tour, California longboarding, and shortboard titles.
Bartlow was a passenger in a car driven by a man under the influence. The vehicle hit a tree, and Sophia died at Waialua Beach Road.
Nearly 1,000 surfers paddled out in his memory at Huntington Beach.
