Miami Pro Am 2011: this is tight racing | Photo:

Wilhelm Schurmann has one the Miami Pro Am 2011, held in the Floridian city of the US East Coast. The Brazilians dominated the entire windsurf classic event. Paulos dos Reis was second and Mathias Pinheiro took bronze.

The weather conditions were great. Steady winds of 14 to 17 knots and excited windsurfers were part of the winning formula. According to, there was a start well offshore and the upwind mark well clear of any wind shadows.

Sailors would make their way down to a gate about 50 yards above the start, then back up, then down, then back up again. A total of five races were held.

The greatest challenge for competitors as the day wore on besides the course itself, was the increasing presence of weeds on the Bay. Schurmann dominated the Miami Pro Am 2011, again, while Alex Morales was another of the standouts in the Open Fleet.

Bebeko Aldo Maia won the Junior fleet and lone woman racer Karen Marriott finished in front of many male windsurfers, in some of the windsurfing races.

It is one of the sport's most forgotten disciplines. The stand-up bodyboarding movement had its heyday between the late 1980s and early 1990s, but it continues to be an exquisite art.
