Auckland Freestyle Champs

The Auckland Freestyle Champs will be run in May and the idea is to run it on stand by without fixed location again to score the best possible conditions.

The stand by period will be the whole month of May and every Saturday/Sunday within this month could be a possible comp day. Same as last year we'll give updates during the week and make a final call on Friday.

The event
The Auckland Freestyle Champs is a comp designed to promote freestyle in the Auckland area and nationwide in a fun environment. The event is run on a standby mode to get the best possible conditions. This year the standby period is set for the whole month of May with Sat/Sun being possible competition days.

Everyone is welcome and you don’t have to be an expert to participate. If a jibe is the most radical maneuver you can do, that’s fine as long as you do it with a big smile on your face! You might get inspired by tricks that other riders perform and try one yourself. There is no pressure or other competition hassle, it’s still a “fun” event!

Sailing conditions
We are looking for the best conditions possible. The event location depends on wind direction, tides and access, so to get the best out of all factors we decide on a location only the night before the event. For regular updates give me a call on 021 14 22 830.

The format is kept really simple to make it fun for everyone. We will run expression sessions in a flagged off area to select the finalists for an A and B final. The format caters for all levels and we will give out an overall ranking in two categories. “Hotshots” and “Experts”

Depending on the conditions we will run looser rounds/finals so everyone get’s a good share of sailing in the comp. There will be one overall winner “The Auckland Freestyle Champ”, but this year we decided to also crown the best “hotshot” of the comp and reward her/him with an awesome prize! Please note, every participant will qualify for great spot prizes given out at the “after-comp-BBQ”.

We are proud to announce that two of the top NZ Freestylers committed to be judging the ’09 Freestyle Champs. Mario Leitner and Pete Smith will be watching every move on the water and go head to head in a special “judges-expression-session” at the end of the comp. For guidelines on Freestyle scoring, please refer to the attached PWA print in the back.

Any spot in Auckland depending on conditions on event day, but most likely Pt.Chev. or Takapuna
