Janis Preiss: alone in the Baltic Sea

Janis Preiss has sailed for 11 hours to cross the Baltic Sea, from Liepaja to the Gotland Island.

The Latvian windsurfer had this dream for eight years. Preiss wanted to be the first windsurfer to connect Latvia and Sweden, in a 320-kilometer (198.8 miles) journey.

Preiss had already tried twice to complete the windsurfing stunt, in 2005 and 2010. This time, he trained hard to be ready and fulfill his longtime dream.

September 9th was the day. With the assistance of supporting yacht "Nordic Virgin", he became the first Latvian windsurfer to sail from Liepaja to the Gotland Island.

"In the end it became just harder and harder. I was quite tired. But I also have to say that all the conditions were just great - wind was blowing, sun was shining, the equipment worked just perfectly, as well as my supporting team on the yacht".

Janis Preiss reached Sweden with energy drinks and chocolate bars, at an average speed of 30km/h. A documentary film about Preiss' trip to Gotland - "To Reach the Highest Peaks" - will be released soon.
