Windsurfing and kiteboarding: counting votes for the Olympic Games

Windsurfers and kiteboarders agree that both sports should be listed in the official sailing program of the 2016 Olympic Games, set for Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The problem is that there seems to be only one place for two sports. Windsurfing or kiteboarding? The "and" option is clear far from reality, as the ISAF Events Committee discuss the final recommendations that are sent to the Council.

A "Third Way" is still being studied, but the chances of success are very low - that the ISAF ask the IOC to get another set of medals for kite as a new discipline and therefore defer the final decision on the boards until November.

The problem is not in asking for more medals for kiteboarding. The question is that there may not be a new set of medals available for the Olympic sailing event.

The scenario looks definitely brighter for the RS:X windsurfing class because it was considered that if the Council want to make a decision on the 2016 boards now, the Events Committee recommendation is that RS:X Men and RS:X Women get selected.

The fact is that national sailing associations have invested too much money into their windsurfing programs and leaving them is not a sustainable call. uses cookies to ensure you get the best experience on our website. Learn more on our About section.
