They say life starts at 40, and if this truly is the case then this year’s edition of the Mr. Price Pro is set to be the best yet. Founded in 1969, the event formerly known as the Gunston 500, has brought the world’s top surfers to Durban’s shores for four decades and 2008 will be no different.
Over 200 international surfers are set to converge at New Pier Beach for the ninth edition of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS) 6-Star Mr. Price Pro, which kicks off from June 27-July 6, 2008.
Marking the halfway stage on the prestigious ASP WQS (the qualifier for the top tier ASP World Tour), the 6-Star rated Mr. Price Pro will see tensions running high as surfers contend for valuable ASP ratings points and a spot among the world’s Top 45 surfers at the end of the year.
Sunny Garcia (HAW), 1992 Gunston 500 Champion and 2000 ASP World Champion, has been granted a wildcard entry into this year’s Mr. Price Pro and will be gunning for a solid result in the hope to return to top tier competition.

This weekend marks the grand opening of Silver Rapids Indoor Waterpark at Silver Mountain. The new park adds the thrills of surfing, sliding, tubing, and other wet and wild fun to the high country.
With plenty of snow still on the mountain, resort-goers will be able to ski on the mountain during the day Saturday and come down to surf the waterpark by night.
“It began with the construction of the ski hill, then condominium lodging in the Gondola Village in 2004 and is coming to fruition and is being completed with the opening of Silver Rapids Waterpark,” said Neal Scholey, Silver Mountain Resort Real Estate Sales Manager.
The new waterpark is nearly the size of a football field. It includes body and tube slides, skylight, a lazy river, family raft slide, kid’s activity lagoon, and the ultimate in aquatic attractions – a FlowRider Surf Wave.
In just 10 seconds, 10,000 gallons of surging water is released into the FlowRider’s wave box, combining the thrills of surfing, skateboarding, and snowboarding all in a wet, wild, and – best of all – safe environment. The FlowRider is covered in foam padding so that when a surfer loses the wave, the wipe-out is cushioned.
Open year-round, Silver Rapids will provide endless aquatic fun, along with Silver Mountain’s other multi-season activities. Silver Rapids is the first of its kind at a ski resort in the Western United States, Scholey said.
“The evolution continued last year with the beginning of construction of the Galena Ridge Phase I,” Scholey said, “Planned to be an 18-hole championship golf community, this year rounds out the destination resort atmosphere with the waterpark and planned golf amenities for our guests.”
The FlowRider is the perfect wave, a continuous wave that can be body boarded or surfed. Over 60,000 gallons per minute moving at 35 miles per hour. You are actually standing still but the moving water, under you, gives the illusion that you are moving along at a 35 mile per hour clip. It looks easy but will take some practice to master.
