Al Gharbia: UAE's kitesurfing heaven

The best kitesurfers in the world are headlining the Al Gharbia Watersports Festival 2011, a radical sports event set to Mirfa Public Beach, in the United Arab Emirates.

Al Gharbia is located in the western region of Abu Dhabi and covers 71% of the entire country. It's home to seven main cities and boasts of undulating deserts, including the northern part of the Empty Quarter, the world’s largest sand desert, a nature reserve at Sir Bani Yas Island and 350 kilometres of pristine coastline.

From kiteboards and surf ski kayaks in the waves to chilled-out camping and concerts on shore, the Watersports Festival is destined to be the wettest wildest week in the UAE.

Quite simply UAE’s best-kept secret, Al Gharbia and the Mirfa Public Beach are approximately 120 kilometres west of the city of Abu Dhabi. There will be kitesurfing, sailing, surf ski, kayaking, Dragon boating, parasailing, swimming, sand sculptures, beach football, volleyball and much more.

The festival will also offer a watersports photography competition and night camp activities with music concerts and festive food stations as well as a traditional 'souk' to satisfy eager shoppers.

The 10-day extravaganza is running from March 24th to April 2nd.
