The 2017 Hurley Pro Trestles kicked off in San Clemente, California. And four surfers are already out of the event.

The competition kicked off in three-to-four foot surf at the cobblestone break of Lower Trestles.

Round 1 and four heats of Round 2 have already been completed, which means four athletes are packing up and heading home - Matt Wilkinson, Owen Wright, Joel Parkinson and Connor O'Leary.

Jordy Smith, the current Championship Tour leader, won his heat mainly thanks to a strong first wave scored with a 9.50.

"I was stoked to get that first wave because there were a lot of things going on in that heat with the paddle battle to get things started," revealed Smith

"You can't over surf the wave out there. I was happy to get that 9-pointer to start. I just had to control that heat, and if a good wave came at the end, I was going to go and try to better my score."

John John Florence was almost relegated to the repechage round. The Hawaiian only found the decisive wave in the dying seconds of his heat against Italo Ferreira and Hiroto Ohhara.

"Italo has one of those wild card factors about him -- you don't know what he's going to do. You see him pumping down the line on a left going real fast, and you get a little nervous. I'm just stoked I got two waves in that heat since it was a good battle," notes Florence.

Frederico Morais was the only rookie surfer to survive the Round 1 guillotine. The Portuguese overcame Jack Freestone and local star Kolohe Andino.

"I started off really good and the rest of the heat I couldn't find a backup until I found that five-point ride. Then it became all about managing time and trying to improve upon that. I'm frothing to be here at Trestles," said Morais.
