Everything is XXL and dangerous in "Distance Between Dreams." Hold your breath and get ready for three-wave hold-downs.
Red Bull is quietly taking over the surf movie industry. And Ian Walsh's high-end production is just another step into grandiosity.
In "Distance Between Dreams," you're invited to catch one of the most historic big wave surfing seasons on record through the eyes of Maui surfer Ian Walsh.
The movie, directed by Rob Bruce, shows us how Walsh sets mind and body in motion to redefine the upper limits of what's considered a rideable wave.
"Rather than make a typical surf film that only shows what big wave surfers do, we made a movie that shows who these exceptional individuals are," notes Rob Bruce.
"Very few people realize what guys like Ian and his brothers go through every day, not only physically, but also emotionally and personally, to remain ready and at the top of their sport year-round."
A Session's Work
"Distance Between Dreams" gets viewers into the heart of the action with first-person perspective, state-of-the-art cinematography, and captivating sound.
The film was shot during the El Niño winter season and also features other big wave chargers, including Shane Dorian, John John Florence, Greg Long, DK, Shaun, and Luke Walsh.
"I wanted to show people all the work that goes into those days. A lot of times, people just see the photo of a wave without seeing everything that goes into that session," adds Ian Walsh.
"They don't see the five horrific falls before a guy makes it on that wave. I wanted to show how the session unfolds and all the work that goes into getting a ride of a lifetime."
"You'll see what that view is like from our eyes in this film."
"Distance Between Dreams" premieres on November 26, 2016, at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center in Kahului, Hawaii.
