Mexico is a country well known by surfers. All good spots, amazing spicy food, good vibes, great people (most of them, we believe). Everyone knows that.

Timmy Reys and Tom Lowe were there too, so... But the truth is, for a Portuguese surfer, this is a special place. At least it was for João Kopke.

A few months ago, the Portuguese surfer crossed the Atlantic Ocean to surf classic waves with his filmmaker and producer Nuno Bandeira (White Flag Productions) for three weeks.

The culture, the unknown, the thirst of adventure and "la vida loca" resulted in a clip called "El Sombrero."

"Mexico has one of the most iconic waves in the world, which is in Puerto Escondido. You don't surf there if you don't know the wave, that's for sure," said Kopke.

"There is a hostile environment in the line-up. I've never seen anything like this before. Even between the photographers."

However, "we found out there is a huge variety of surf spots and if you travel a little bit through the coast you will find reefs, endless point breaks that make you have a burning desire for more," continued João.

While we talked, we could feel the emotion of all of his words while describing the places they had been to.

Tierra Blanca, Barra de La Cruz, Las Puntas, all these places gave João the feeling of living something totally different and new. Like surfing for the first time.

That's why this is a clip that, among so many surf clips recorded in Mexican waves, tries to explore, even if in a mild way, what truly defines Mexico to whoever lays eyes on it for the first time.
