Kauli Vaast has taken out the 2019 Tahiti Pro Trials, at Teahupoo, in French Polynesia.

The 17-year-old prodigy defeated Hawaiian sensation, Tyler Newton, in the final, after a standout performance throughout the qualifying event.

All athletes were able to ride perfect, big and blue barrels thanks to the superb wind and swell conditions on offer at the infamous reef break.

"I really wanted to win this. We had perfect conditions all day. I've been training a lot all week, and it paid off. It'll be my first Championship Tour event," said an ecstatic Vaast.

The Tahitian surfer got the best scores of the trials en route to winning the golden ticket to the main event - a 18.10 in Round 1, a 17.10 in the quarterfinals and a 16.90 in the final.

Kauli is the oldest of three siblings. Her sister Aelan and his brother Naiki are already making waves in the Polynesian region.

The 2019 Tahiti Pro Teahupoo will feature three Tahitian surfers: Vaast, Michel Bourez and Matahi Drollet.
