VonZipper is proud to announce the seven local surfers poised to battle it out against the best the world has to offer at Supertubes in Jeffreys Bay.

With three coveted Wild Card slots up for grabs into the prestigious 2009 Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay, the VZ Trials will consist of three heats of four surfers each, comprising both international and local hopefuls.

Traditionally run on the first day the event is called “ON”, the VZ Trials offer a winner-takes-all approach, which sees the victor of each heat awarded a coveted wildcard and advancing directly into Round 1 of the main event.

This year will see the likes of seasoned World Qualifying Series (WQS) protagonists and no less than 3 former South African Surfing Champions battling it out against up-and-coming rippers. Throw in a few underdogs and working class heroes and we are in for a battle royal.

And for the first time there will be additional local flavour with the winner of the16-man Xcel Supertubes Showdown gaining automatic entry into the VonZipper Wildcard Trials ‘09.

Perennial crowd favourite and Supers’ stand-out, Sean Holmes, Wilderness (VZ, Billabong, Kustom) will make a welcome competitive return to the J-Bay line-up. After a season on the sidelines this VZ stalwart will be back to cause some chaos amongst the upper ranks of the top 45.

Sean will be joined in the VZ Trials by the likes of:
Shaun Payne
Dale Staples
Damien Fahrenfort
Devyn Mattheys
Shaun Joubert

The remaining International Wild Card Trialists, as well as the winner of the Xcel Supertubes Showdown, will be determined closer to the event. Once all comers have been selected the heat draws will be announced. Stay tuned.
