The Paris 2024 Olympic surfing competition will take place at Teahupoo in Tahiti.

The Paris 2024 organizing committee proposed that surfing's second Olympic appearance run at the world-renowned left-hand reef break.

Tahiti is located 9,755 miles (15,700 kilometers) away from the French capital.

However, that doesn't seem a problem for the world governing body for the sport of surfing.

The International Surfing Association (ISA) immediately welcomed and supported the recommendation made by the Paris 2024 organizers.

"We salute the five candidatures, but Tahiti was truly exceptional in offering our athletes and our sport spectacular conditions for optimal competitions," said Fernando Aguerre, president of the ISA.

Biarritz, Lacanau, Les Landes, and La Torche also presented bids, but the consistency and spectacularity of the famous Tahitian wave prevailed.

"Tahiti represents the authenticity of surfing, and it is our mission to celebrate and recall the long history and heritage of the sport's Polynesian origins.

Tahiti Will Bring "an Unprecedented Level of Attention"

Aguerre believes that Teahupoo will deliver what the athletes need to shine and spread the magic of surfing while preserving the genuine values of the sport.

Our connection with the environment also makes Tahiti a fitting choice. We promise a concept that will result in a sustainable and low carbon impact event," adds Aguerre.

The surfers' representatives are also pleased with the proposal.

"We're super excited about having Tahiti and Teahupoo hosting us at the Paris 2024 Olympics. I am sure it will draw an unprecedented level of attention and excitement to the Games," concluded Justine Dupont, ISA athletes' commission chair.

On March 3, 2020, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) confirmed the Tahitian venue as the official surfing spot for Paris 2024.

It will be the longest distance ever between an event and the host city at any Olympic Games.
