In the pre-internet era, the Tour debuted the Quiksilver Pro G-Land. In 1996, Kelly also won the US Open of Surfing for the first time in his career.

The year 1998 marked the end of Kelly Slater's first cycle of world tour domination.
Tasting victory, after a six years without touching the world tour title. Slater returns to victories at the Billabong Pro Tahiti. A single wave reignited the flame in the Cocoa Beach rider. He took off on a lefthander, almost fell and recovered in the barrel zone to kick off the second cycle of world surfing domination.
