The American Windsurfing Tour (AWT) has gone global. The new name is International Windsurfing Tour (IWT).
The largest wave sailing circuit in the world decided to update its brand after seven years of growth. The new name reflects the fact that the old AWT is no longer a strictly American competition.
In the last years, the AWT expanded to Mexico and Morocco, so the change to International Windsurfing Tour is a natural evolution. However, the new IWT has a few surprises for fans and athletes.
With the new name comes additional tour stops. The 2017 International Windsurfing Tour schedule features no less than ten stages, and it will run six divisions: Pro, Women, Amateur, Master, Grand Master, and Youth.
But how will the IWT coexist with the PWA Wave World Tour, especially when both organizations award separate titles at the same venue in Maui? Why couldn't the IWT and the PWA blend their efforts and deliver a stronger circuit?
