The 2020 World Cup Gran Canaria Frontón King is scheduled to run from October 17-31 at Gáldar, in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria.

Despite the global Covid-19 pandemic, the local Spanish authorities have authorized the legendary bodyboarding competition held every year at El Frontón.

The contest organizers, who also manage the IBC World Tour, confirmed that the 2020 Frontón King is the only tour event running this year.

The official Frontón King press release also notes that the event's competitive format will change and adapt to a "world cup" status.

The organization is not clear whether the Spanish competition will crown a world champion, though.

Safety First

The Frontón King crew aims to run a 100 percent safe event.

As a result, it has been decided that there will be no spectators on-site watching the world's best bodyboarders in action.

"The World Cup Gran Canaria Frontón King 2020 will have and adopt all the health protocols to ensure both the competitors and the organization are always safe," the statement underlines.

"The access to El Frontón will be restricted throughout the whole week. Bodyboards fans will be able to follow the competition via online streaming."

The 2020 Frontón King is a specialty event that will crown champions in male and female divisions.

Amaury Lavernhe, Pierre-Louis Costes, Tristan Roberts, Sari Ohhara, Isabela Sousa, and Alexandra Rinder are some of the international riders that have already been confirmed.

They will be joined by local stars Jonathan Vega, William Lujan, Dailos Rodríguez, Teresa Padilla, and Lara Ascanio.

"The event consolidates Gran Canaria as a safe destination for the sports enthusiast and celebrates the world's most important professional bodyboarding contest in one of the most radical spots on the planet, El Frontón," the organizers concluded.
