Nathan Mershon: the US expert

Waddell Creek, north of Santa Cruz, was the perfect venue for the 2011 Santa Cruz Classic, the first stage of the American Windsurfing Tour. More than tha 70 windsurfers entered competition.

In the first day and despite light winds, Head Judge Matt Pritchard sent the junior division out who put on a show for the crowd lining the cliff. Heat one started with Nick Dudet picking off a solid wave and taking the lead. From there it was a battle of wave selection with Morgan Noireaux, Dudet and Jordan Reid duking it out.

Heat two marked the competition debut of Harley Ston. The 12-year old son of former world champion Josh Stone. Although underpowered he toughed out the heat against Bernd Roediger, Jay Watermeyer and Sean Williams. Roediger picked the wave-of-the-day right at the start of the heat and is looking to be in top form for this competition.

In the second day, nearly all the single eliminations were completed. The Youth final was the best heat of the day. Bernd Roediger edged Morgan Noireaux in an epic battle.

In the final day, all the single and double eliminations for the Youth, Women and Masters divisions were sailed. Nathan Mershon claimed the Expert title and Brian Caserio took the Masters division.

Josh Stone won the Expression Session. The American Windsurfing Tour now heads to the Pistol River Wave Bash, to be competed between 16th and 19th June.
