Jordy Smith posted high scores in the non-elimination Round of 24, at the Vans US Open of Surfing 2013, in Huntington Beach.

The South African surfer belted a 9.17 and 8.20 for progressive surfing on a pierbowl right and wedgy lefthander. Smith's efforts would see him secure a Round of 16 berth over C.J. Hobgood and Ramzi Boukhiam.

"I knew that heat was going to be tough. Ramzi has been ripping and C.J. started strong with that 8. I got that 9 and that was the turning point for me. If you get the right waves out there you’re going to get high scores", says Jordy.

Adriano de Souza got the best of an all-Brazilian affair in his Round of 24 clash, besting Jadson Andre and Alex Ribeiro to advance directly through to the Round of 16.

"I was nervous because I creased my board twice, but I knew I couldn’t leave Jadson and Alex out there alone. For me this year this event’s so much fun because I’ve had a big year already and I’m happy to be making my heats here at the US Open", expresses De Souza.

Kolohe Andino took out a big victory in his non-elimination Round of 24 heat, topping defending event champion Julian Wilson and ASP WCT rookie Sebastian Zietz, to advance directly to the Round of 16.

"I have so much respect for Julian and Seabass. I wanted to beat them really bad. The waves are more fun today, they’re more peaky and I’m stoked on that. This contest is so hard and all of the Primes have WCT guys and then guys that want the money or points", tells Andino.

Frenchman Vincent Duvignac put in a banner performance to top Bede Durbidge and Michel Bourez, advancing directly to the Round of 16.

"That was crazy. Last heat I had Kelly and I came here with nothing to lose. I just wanted to get points to get in to Prime events for the back half of the year. This week has been a huge contrast for me", says Duvignac.
