European Union is ready to ban single-use plastics

The European Commission proposed a set of rules that will ban and dramatically reduce the use of single-use plastics in the 28 member states of the European Union (EU).

The executive arm of the EU is ready to target the ten single-use plastic products most often found on Europe's seas and beaches which constitute 70 percent of all marine litter items.

The Commission's proposals aim to put Europe ahead of the curve on an issue with planetary implications.

Offshore oil drilling prospects overshadow Portugal's surf appeal

The Portuguese government authorized the Galp-ENI consortium to start an oil prospection program in Aljezur, off the country's southwest coast.

In 2017, Portugal welcomed over 20 million tourists. It was a historic year for a country with a population of around 10 million.

Kilauea volcano erupts in Hawaii's Big Island

Thirty-five years later, the Kilauea volcano erupted, and lava start to flow into the local forest and through cracks in the road.

People who live in the nearby residential areas have been ordered to leave their homes. More than 10,000 residents fled their properties in Hawaii's Big Island.

At 8 pm, Governor David Ige signed an emergency proclamation for the territory. The Governor of Hawaii activated the Hawaii National Guard to provide support to county emergency response personnel to help with evacuations and security.
