WAKSA RedKite Downwinder 2009

Following in the footsteps of the event being planned in SA, WAKSA is organising a fund raising downwinder to support Redkite – a charity supporting children and young people through cancer.

The inaugural WAKSA Redkite Downwinder will be held on Sunday 6th December 2009 and will give participants an opportunity to raise $$ for Redkite.

In order to make fundraising quick and easy, we have set up a website to coordinate the process and to make collecting all monies raised really simple. If you or your crew are keen to win some really decent prizes CLICK HERE to go to the site and then click on the ‘Build Fundraising Page Now’ button to enter your details and start raising money.

The meeting point for the event will be at Brighton and we plan to start once we get a sense of what the wind is doing on the day, but as usual expect that to be anytime from 2.30/3.00pm. Kiters will have two course options, depending upon the wind obviously, and their skills and experience – starting at either Leighton Beach and finishing at Brighton Beach, or for the newer kiters out there, starting at City Beach and kiting straight up the coast to finish at Brighton.

In order to participate, kiters will be asked to contribute a $20 entry fee (small change really isn’t it???) but for those keen to raise extra funds for Redkite, WAKSA has arranged a number of shops, to contribute prizes which will be awarded to participants. It might be the individual kiter or a team of kiters who raises the most $$$ for the event, it might be for the kiter in the most outrageous costume on the day, it could be for the kiter to finish the down winder first (with the exception of Ian Young of course ;-) ….)

A number of kite and record/CD shops around Perth have already contributed several hundred dollars worth of prizes to encourage you to get out there and raise funds for Redkite. We will provide details of what’s up for grabs in the coming weeks. WAKSA is also throwing in free entry to Kitestock 2010 for a couple of lucky kiters.

One of our sponsors has agreed to provide buses to transport kiters to the start locations on the day and of course, there will be the obligatory sausage sizzle at the end for all participants.

Due to the fact that we are required to have significant public liability insurance to conduct an event like this, WAKSA membership is a prerequisite to participate in this event. If you still don't have this then go to the Home page page and click on the big 'Subscribe' button to start the process.

Book the date in your diaries now folks – Sunday 6th December 2009 for the inaugural WAKSA – Redkite Charity Downwinder.

In order to successfully conduct this event, WAKSA also needs a number of volunteers to help out on the day. Anybody prepared to put in a couple of hours on the day can email us for further details.

The first 720 rotation in skateboarding was completed, for the the first time, by Tony Hawk in 1985. Two full mid-air rotations. Fourteen years later, the same Tony Hawk would upgrade it to 900, at the X Games. Skaters have already pushed the limits of aerial rotations.
