Praia do Norte: gnarly wave

The Sumol Nazaré Special Edition 2011 has opened its contest window until November 1st. The big wave bodyboarding event held in Praia do Norte, Nazaré, Portugal, has already locked in the best riders in the world.

Amaury Lavernhe, world bodyboarding champion, Pierre Louis Costes, Jeff Hubbard and Dudu Pedra have confirmed their presence in the Sumol Nazaré Special Edition 2011. For the first time, the Portuguese competition will be embedded in the International Bodyboard Association (IBA) calendar.

Twenty four bodyboarders will be battling for one of the most prestigious big wave bodyboarding events in the world.

The riders' list also includes Luís “Porkito” Pereira, Fábio “Marreta” Laureano, Gonçalo “Pitaça” Campos, Jaime Jesus, Ricardo Faustino, António Cardoso, João “Mag8” André, Gastão Entrudo, Dino Carmo, Tiago Moita Silva, Paulo Costa, Filipe “Fifi” Ferreira, Manuel Centeno, João Pinheiro, Rui Ferreira, Francisco “Chico” Pinheiro, Bernardo Barroso, Tiago Fazendeiro, João Neiva and Rui Pereira.

The Nazare Canyon is an undersea canyon just off the coast of Nazaré, Portugal, in the Eastern Atlantic Ocean. It has a maximum depth of at least 5,000 metres (16,000 ft) and is about 230 kilometres (140 mi) long. It is larger than the Grand Canyon.
