Catarina Sousa: Portuguese pride

Catarina Sousa has conquered the Miss Sumol Cup and is the new European bodyboarding champion. The Portuguese rider took the final heat after beating the former champion Karla Costa Taylor, Rita Pires and Marta Fernandes.

The bodyboarder from Carcavelos Beach is the first Portuguese rider to win this exclusive women's competition. The 7th edition of the Miss Sumol Cup was surfed by 44 bodyboarders from 10 countries, in the Costa Nova Beach, Ilhavo.

"I was following this title for seven years. It's great and I can't believe I've won it. This is a great victory for all the Portuguese girls and we were trying to win it for a long time", said Catarina Sousa.

"I couldn't hear the scores from the judges, so I tried to stay cool and focus on the waves", she added. Sousa scored a total of 14.40 point, ahead of Karla Costa Taylor's 13.60 points.

"I am happy with the second place and for Catarina, my friend here in Portugal", said Karla Costa Taylor. "I've finished by trip in Portugal very well. I just love this championship because of the friendship between all the girls".

The best wave of the 2011 Miss Sumol Cup was surfed by Ayaka Suzuki, while Eunate Aguirre got the best heat score with 14.65 points. There were 575 waves surfed in the contest.
