Margate Beach prepares for the South Coast Bodyboarding Classic
Tuesday, 27 April 2010 09:56

Margate Beach: lovely

The stage is set and all the preparation is coming together for what looks to be the bodyboarding contest of the year. Agent 18 Wetsuits and South Coast Tourism has teamed up to be the anchor sponsors of this years' Southern Kwa-Zulu Natal SABA (South African Bodyboarding Association) event to be held at Margate Beach 1 - 2 May.

This will be the 2nd of 4 stops on the SABA circuit for those competitors in search of winning the converted SABA titles.

“We are really excited about our fresh new sponsors Agent 18 and South Coast Tourism taking over the KZN South Coast’s longest running bodyboarding contest. The event is now into its 14th year on The South Coast but in its' eleventh year at Margate Beach and has cemented itself as a highlight on the SABA Tour. This makes it the longest running SABA event in KZN. Entries have been pouring in and we would like to invite members of the public to enjoy the weekend with us at Margate beach,” commented event organizer and Southern KZN Bodyboarding Association Chairman Wayne Beekman. The big swell that was predicted for the past week did materialize and might have improved the sandbanks even more for the event as many of the locally based competitors have been preparing themselves for an awesome contest. Looking ahead at the swell prediction it seems like we could be in for really good conditions.

Other confirmed sponsors for the the event are PowerBalance, Lizzard, Spec Savers, Factory 7, Nuform, Criss Cross Security, Wimpy Margate and Wavehouse Gateway. Competitors will be competing for cash prizes as well as product prizes put up by these generous sponsors to the value of R100 000

Event divisions include: Boys, Juniors, Dropknee, Pro's, Mens, Masters, Grand Masters and Ladies

Some of the best bodyboarders in the country as well as internationally will be seen in action at this event such as Darren Halse (Amanzimtoti), Derek Footit (Uvongo), Wesley Fisher (Durban) and rumor has it that Australian based internationally renowned big wave charger and Agent18 sponsored rider Glen Thurston will be flying out to compete at this year’s event.

Other attractions to look out for during the event are PowerBalance Skimming contest and demonstrations as well as a free coaching clinic for anyone who is interested in learning how to bodyboard. There will also be a daily cash prize of R600 awarded to the competitor in any division who either does the biggest maneuver or gets the highest score for a wave thanks to Jared Houston (Cape Town) and Factory 7surf store.
