Hot air balloon: riding the waves of Cardiff-by-the-Sea

A marriage proposal in a hot air balloon ended up in the waves, in California. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

It was supposed to be just another beautiful afternoon near Cardiff-by-the-Sea. The surfers were enjoying the last waves of the day, under a magical sunset.

Suddenly, the line-up felt there was something wrong with a hot air balloon drifting a few meters up in the sky. Inside the balloon basket, Eric Barretto had proposed to his fiancee.

But the touching moment would turn into an adventure. The pilot lost control of his giant craft and simply couldn't get it back to shore. As a result, the hot air balloon landed in the surf.

"It's unforgettable. That's all I can say. I don't know if we'll do it again. We were just over water the whole time, and we just couldn't get back toward the land area," Barretto told.

"A paddleboarder was underneath us. We just yelled out for help and said, 'Hey, grab the rope and pull us in' and sure enough that's what they did."

The Southern California couple and the pilot were rescued by surfers.

How is it that the entertainment machines, filmmakers, creatives, authors, and artists, which have churned out thousands upon thousands of stories, in seemingly every genre, topic and medium imaginable hasn't yet given wakeboarding a story? No movie? No book? No graphic novel?
