Julian Wilson conquered the 2018 Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast, in Kirra, Australia.

In an all-Australian final, Wilson kicked off the pro surfing season with a bang and defeated fellow countryman Adrian Buchan.

The first event of the World Surf League (WSL) 2018 Championship Tour (CT) delivered spectacular wave riding conditions for the final day of competition.

Julian Wilson opened his account with a near-perfect ride scored with 9.93 points and later backed it up with a solid 7.50 wave.

"This is a childhood dream come true to come down from the Sunshine Coast and win the Quiksilver Pro. I learned a lot about myself at this event, and through this injury, and the birth of my baby girl, Olivia, and my wife, Ashley," said Wilson.

In late January, Julian suffered a shoulder injury that almost put him out of the Gold Coast event. But the new baby helped him get ready for the contest.

"Watching the birth of my first child gave me an unbelievable strength to just suck up the pain in my shoulder, and come down here, and do what I needed to do."

On the women's side, Lakey Peterson found the barrel and the waves needed to defeat Keely Andrew and claimed the 2018 Roxy Pro Gold Coast.

"I don't even know what to say to say. I've been working for seven years to get another win. It's been a while, so the hard work pays off. My goal is to stay steady the whole year and just believe in myself and enjoy the ride," concluded Peterson.
