Ziphius: the surfer's drone

Ziphius is the newest smartphone or tablet-controlled surf gadget. The aquatic drone is equipped with a built-in camera and can ride along with the surfer in the wave line.

Two brushless DC motors, one main impact-resistant plastic base unit, and interchangeable foam backs. Meet Ziphius, a water gadget invention born in the Azores Islands.

Ziphius can move in every direction and even dive to capture stunning footage from a barreling wave. Using an included iOS or Android app, users can remotely control the drone via Wi-Fi from a distance of up to 300 feet (90 m).

Not only does the app allow them to control the speed and direction of the Ziphius, but it also provides them with a 720p live feed from an onboard HD video camera. Its maximum forward speed is 6 mph (9.7 km/h).

Ziphius' backs are configured for performing different tasks, such as transporting drinks in pools, or serving as a GoPro camera mount. Should the drone be flipped over in rough seas, its self-righting design ensures that it will roll back up.

Azorean, the company behind Ziphius, launched the Ziphius campaign on crowd funding and aims to reach 125,000 USD, which will then be used for perfecting the prototype further, and kicking off the aquatic drone's industrialization phase.

Ziphius can be extremely useful in surf contests and even for personal surfers' use. Just get your friends or family in the beach controlling the aquatic drone and capture the most incredible photos and videos of your surfing career.

Whether you think of a kite as a wing or a sail, you want it to be lightweight, resistant, waterproof, but also stiff and flexible at the same time, so that they could respond to all flight requests.
