The Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast 2016 has finally reached the quarterfinals. Eight surfers will compete for the first event title of the Championship Tour (CT) season, at Snapper Rocks.

The 2015 World Surf League champion kept his momentum going in the perfect three-to-four-foot surf. Adriano de Souza seems to adapt well to the Superbank, and the Round 5 victim was Conner Coffin.

"I needed to fight so hard in order to come back in this heat. Conner is a super talented kid, and he started the heat pretty well with that 8. I realized that when I have the opportunity I have to push as hard as I can every single turn," explained De Souza.

Who will stop Stuart Kennedy from making more damage? This time, it was Sebastian Zietz who suffered at the hands of the Australian wildcard. Kennedy had the highest two-wave total of Round 5: 17.67 points.

"It is good to finally let loose on that one. I felt a lot more comfortable and glad the waves turned on in that heat," said Stu Kennedy.

Last but not least, Joel Parkinson had to work hard to defeat the 2016 CT rookie Caio Ibelli. The local star found two eight-point rides and moved through to the quarterfinals.

"Caio's waves probably did not have the length. He ripped on them and had good starts on them, but they just didn't have the legs the rest of the way. I hadn't had a heat where I had two 8s, but I wanted to really put a heat together with a big total," concluded Parkinson.
