Josh Constable, Georgia Young, Thomas Woods and Philippa Anderson have been crowned the 2011 Australian Longboard and Junior surfing champions.
Constable finished the 2011 Australasian Longboard Qualifying Series equal first with American Taylor Jensen. The top two surfers from each ASP region (North America, South America, Europe, Australasia, Africa, Japan) then go on to compete for an ASP World Title. Since Jensen is from another region the second Australasian qualifying spot goes to third placed Mitch Surman.
"I’m wrapped" Constable said. "I had a good start to the year and all my training paid off. Now I’ve got to get ready for the World Longboard Tour events, so I plan on doi ng plenty of surfing, boxing and training. I can’t wait to go to the SriLankan Airlines Pro and shake things up."
In the women’s division we had another American, Jennifer Smith take top honours. With the Australasian qualifying spots going to Georgia Young and Emma Webb who placed second and third respectively.
"It was unbelievable to have a win at the Whalebone Classic," Young said. "Especially because it’s at my homebreak and my favourite event of the year. This was the first time I’ve surfed in the event as a LQS. I think Women’s longboarding is really starting to attract some attention and I’m stoked to be a part of that for next year!"
The Men’s Australasian Pro Junior Series title race went down to the wire with all the top seeds making the Quarterfinals of the last event of the year, the Fantastic Noodles Pro Junior, Victor Harbour – South Australia. Thomas Woods (Gold Coast, QLD) took the title when he finished 2nd at the seaso n ending event and will lead a solid team of Australasian surfers to ASP World Junior Tour later this year.
"I’m so stoked," Woods said. "It all sunk in that afternoon, then we went out and had a fun night. I’m going to head to Bali this week to film some video clips, but it will be a good chance to get some practise out at Keramas for the Oakley World Pro Junior. Then I’m going to try and get into some Star events in Europe, so I should be nice and warmed up for the World Junior Tour later in the year."
The 2011 Women’s Australasian Pro Junior Series Title race has seen a tug-o-war between Philippa Anderson (Newcastle, NSW) and Dimity Stoyle (Sunshine Coast, QLD) all year. But it was Anderson who proved too strong, claiming the series crown and winning the last event of the year the Fantastic Noodles Pro Junior, Victor Harbour – South Australia.
"It feels pretty good," Anderson said. "We went our to dinner with all the girls in Victor Harbour, then I went home and celebrated with my family. I’m going into the World Juniors with confidence from winning the Junior Series, but I’ve never competed there before so hopefully I can still be the underdog too."
