The 2013 Hurley Pro has entered Round 2 in the first day of competition at Lower Trestles, California.
Surfers hit the water in clean two-to-four foot (1 metre) waves at Lower Trestles, for a week of barrier-breaking surfing and dramatic competition.
Kelly Slater and Joel Parkinson failed to win their Round 1 heats, and had to surf their best to beat wildcards Dane Reynolds and Ian Crane, in Round 2.
"There was definitely a bit of pressure in that heat because Mick has good results and Joel has a few bad results I also don't have anything to throw away and Mick has all keepers. Also, Jordy is every bit in this race so it was important to me to get out of that one", says Slater.
Julian Wilson was deadly on both the lefts and rights, unloading an impressive repertoire of airs and turns to secure an excellent 17.40-point heat against Miguel Pupo and John John Florence.
"I'm focusing on my surfing and my equipment and once I start to do that everything falls in to place. I'm in a good head space and the waves are always fun here so hopefully the swell sticks around for a few more days", explains Wilson.
Jordy Smith, Mick Fanning, Gabriel Medina, Brett Simpson and Adriano de Souza would dominate their initial battles to move out directly to Round 3.
